Training courses

Our training courses are residential or non-residential, staying at a local Bed & Breakfast. Training fee per handler is £150.00 for a two-day course (lunch and refreshments included), the number of handlers varies normally 6 to 8, spectator charge £30 per person per day.

Please email Coshy for more details and availability

Our courses are designed so that you succeed in your training, not fail, and that you build your relationship with your dog in a positive approach. Steve always says that he is ‘teaching you to train your dog’™.

On a weekend course you can expect on the first day to have an informal evaluation of all dogs, finding out how you operate with your dog, what your problem areas are, what your aspirations with your dog are, then Steve will go from there and work from your/your dogs level to start you on his positive techniques of training.

Our facilities:

We are fortunate to have access to moorland, fields and woodlands (400 acres shoot). Ponds and some running water. We have secure paddocks and a retrieving lane.

We hope to be able to help you in one way or another in your training.

Following feedback from our very successful residential training courses it has become apparent that attendees would appreciate the opportunity to have additional training sessions in small groups during the year to assist them to fine tune their skills. Therefore we have created and are now able to offer weekend courses for up to 6/8 dogs and their handlers.

These courses are open to anyone (and any breed of gundog) with an interest in learning the art of handling a gundog in respect of either the shooting or trialling fields or just enjoying your dog. We can also arrange ‘one to one’ training sessions to suit any individual requirements – please contact us to discuss your needs.

Although we advertise some training weekend dates if you are unable to attend one, but have a weekend that you could do, please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we will try to accommodate you.

All dates shown in Devon which are not full could have the possibility of being booked by a single group who would like Steve to travel to their own venue and train. If you would be interested, or know of anyone who would be, please ask for more details and costs.

Course definitions

These definitions give you some idea of what we will be covering and potentially what standard you would be.

Building on from the beginner, as the dogs get slightly older, so making retrieves more difficult, starting to incorporate the stop whistle at a short distance. Focus excersies etc and again, problem solving.

  • Heel work on and off the lead.
  • Basic recall and whistle uses.
  • Socialization in the field.
  • The start of retrieving.
  • Hunting correctly

The stop whistle should be in place at a short distance. Retrieving should be of a reasonable standard, as should the focusing and hunting, this is so that you can move forward with your field craft, into more complex training areas of work, ie multipal retrieves, blind retieves, etc Introduction of shot.

Graduate & open

Again, this is a continuation from the novice.

Field craft and cold game

We will be looking at the rules and regulations for field trialing and putting both dog and handler in possible trialing situations. Introduction of cold game etc.

Working Test brush up

Is a refresh for all those handlers who may want to get out there for the 2016 working test season. Problem solving etc
